Day 22: Rainy Days and Wash Day

Today was the first rainy all day sort of day in a while. We walked to school in a light rain and it pretty much lasted all day. We did laundry in the afternoon and spent several hours (in one hour increments between moving laundry around) at the Mediothek studying.

During the coffee break, we walked to the book store to pick up some more books. This time they are children's fantasy novels (A trilogy) in German by a famous female German author. Her name is Cornelia Funke and some people think of her as the German equivalent of J. K. Rowling (of Harry Potter fame). Amelia read the first book in English a few months ago and bought the set to try to read in German over the next year. We are going to have to figure out a way to ship all the books home soon.

In the evening we went to dinner with Michael our friend from Connecticut. He spent the first two weeks in Andy's class and then moved to Amelia's class. He's an engineering student at Rochester. He is American and has an Irish father and a Peruvian mother. We are all about the multicultural around here! He took an official A2 level exam today to get college credit for his classes and we treated him to supper and a beer afterward to help him get over the shock of the exam process. We were going to sum Löwen again but it was closed (we haven't memories which days are rest days for each restaurant, clearly) so we walked over to Como Prima just across the river and had gnocchi and pizza for supper.

Afterward we walked home and then decided to go out for ice cream. At a nearby gelateria (not the one next door which had closed because of the rain) we ran into a big group of young people from the Institute out for the evening "Stammtisch," which is just a weekly excuse for a group to go out to eat and drink. We had ice cream while most of them were having supper.

We met a few new folks, including Jill from Nigeria. She's been here since January and started in the beginning level. She is now well past our level! We also talked with Ashis and Dipti, a couple from India who are in Andy's class.

Despite the rain, it was a pretty good day.
