Day 24: Rainy and Cool Saturday

Today we slept in and went out for breakfast. Going out for breakfast isn't that easy because most restaurants don't serve breakfast. However, the other day we saw a hotel that advertised breakfast so we went there. It happened to be the hotel our friend Julian is staying in so he ended up joining us for breakfast.  The breakfast was expensive but at least it was breakfast!

After breakfast we wandered through the Saturday farmer's market and bought some supplies for Sunday breakfast (eggs, cheese, bread).

This building beside the breakfast hotel and also beside the church, was the site of a KomburgerHof and Pub from 1323 to the Reformation.

So much cheese!

Here's our coordinated street musician playing the trumpet and the accordion. The accordion is very popular with street musicians but this is the first time we've seen it combined with the trumpet.

From the corner of the market, looking down Neue Straße, it's clear that everyone is out shopping on Saturday morning (there's no shopping on Sundays).

We ran into our friend Pat from Ireland on the walk home. She started in the beginner class and is now studying privately one on one with a teacher. She is very interesting.

Then we went home and studied for a while.

When we got restless, we went shopping. We bought some hard candy at Oma's Lädle not far from our apartment.

This store always gives a bonus trial size of something and today's were some healthy natural cough drops.

Then we wandered through the old city to the yarn store.

Amelia bought some interesting Italian yarn.

We have no idea why all the yarn there is Italian (nor why it's all Turkish at home) but it was lovely.

We walked back through the old city in search of the public restrooms (and found them, saving us the walk all the way home). Then, we went in search of the custom t-shirt store. It took us a while to find it (although we've seen it before) because it's tucked in a corner and we walked right past it the first time without seeing it or what was in the corner.

Fortunately, while we were wandering up and down that street (Schwarzbühlgasse) we ran into our favorite Italian waiter's Russian wife and their children.  She is very friendly and we had a nice chat.

We both were sure the t-shirt store was on that street in that block so we walked back through. It was easier to see from the other direction!

So, we ordered custom t-shirts like our old black ones that say "I love my husband" or "I love my wife" except these are in German. The store owner was amused but he planned them out and promised them in an hour.

We told him we'd come back after lunch. We headed over the river to Zum Löwen for lunch but happened to walk in right behind a big group of people so no tables were available. On cold rainy days when the restaurants can't use their outdoor seating, tables indoors are hard to get. On the way out we met a couple from Fort Worth and had a long chat in the street. His job brings him here periodically, he said.

Then we wandered off trying to think of where to eat. We found Weinstube Würth a block down and a bit up another street, across from the Johannitterkirche Museum (old masters) and decided to try it.

It was lovely! It's a small restaurant/pub and the atmosphere was quiet and warm and the service and food were superb.

Andy had the Schwäbisher Wurstsalat mit Brot (Brot not pictured) and Amelia had Paniertes Schnitzel mit Pommes frites und Salat.

Then, we strolled back to the t-shirt store and picked up our t-shirts. We had a long chat with the owner in a combination of German and English. It was fun.

Then we wandered down the street and listened to a street musician. He is coordinated! He played the trumpet and the accordion at the same time. We saw him earlier near the Marktplatz.

That took us to the confectionary which we've admired from afar but never entered. We bought a few truffles (and were given another as a bonus) and some samples of candies (two of each of several sorts to try - bought by weight). Then the rain started again and we trudged home, getting pretty wet.

We spent some time studying and showering and just having a quite few hours and then headed out to supper. We decided to go to Pulcinella, which is our default answer to "Where do you want to go for supper?" but when we got there no tables were available.  In the USA, one might just wait on a table, but in Europe that's pretty rude, really, and folks eating can take their time as long as they want. No one is rushed out of a restaurant (partly because the waiters do not live on tips here). The waitress told us to come back around 8pm. So we went home to study some more.

We returned later and had a long relaxing meal (if a bit late at night).

Andy had the chicken breast filet with pasta in a tomato sauce.

Amelia had the filet in gorgonzola sauce with pasta stuffed with ricotta and pear.

Andy had the tiramisu and Amelia had VanillaEis.
